Historic Thompson’s Store is the oldest grocery store in the state of North Carolina. This family-owned store was founded in 1890 and has been in business for 125 years. After recently going through its first major renovation since opening at the current location way back in 1940, the store is now better than ever! This old timey family grocery store has expanded its famous full-service meat market and added a delicious deli section along with new selections of wine, beer and cheese, all to compliment the traditional fresh produce and staple food sections. New lines of healthier foods and imported foods are also being added weekly as we expand the selections of products our customers request. We have also added a small section featuring our official Coon Dog Day merchandise (t-shirts, ball caps and visors, sweatshirts). Be extra sure to check out the meat market, where our butchers have captured the fine art of making our famous fresh-made Thompson’s Sage Sausage, using the exact same secret family recipe handed down for over 70 years.
We invite you to visit our new old store, admire the beautifully refinished heart pine flooring, the tongue and groove walls and ceiling and experience its old time ambience and delicious food items. We also want to hear your suggestions about items you would like the store to offer as we continue to expand our selections.
Most importantly, don’t forget to pop in next door at our Ward’s Grill for a down-home hearty breakfast and sample the best homemade sausage anywhere!!! At lunch we still serve our world famous chili-cheeseburgers and rich milkshakes thick enough to call for a spoon. Melissa Wood, our grill manager with ten years experience in operating her own grill in Flat Rock, is constantly revising the menu to offer new and delicious healthy meals and snacks which complement our traditional breakfast and lunch menus.
In other news, renovations are now complete on the second floor, which encompasses five unique and lovely rooms, each featuring historic paint colors and named in honor of cities in South Carolina and Georgia. We now offer these high quality facilities and catering for special events, from small intimate gatherings to larger celebrations of up to 100 participants. With elevator access and handicapped restrooms along with year-round HVAC, we have made comfort our trademark in this beautiful historic building. Recent additions include an enclosed balcony which adds an extra 14 feet to the rear portion of the structure and provides a great view of the planned courtyard and restored storage building. For inquiries on special events, please contact Judy Ward at 828-749-2321.
