REVIEWS FOR THOMPSON’S STORE AND WARD’S GRILL

From October 2016 Trip Advisor review:

“Down Home” cooking at most reasonable prices!
This place is a local “institution” and gathering place for good food and even better conversation. The staff is friendly and they seem to have been at Ward’s almost forever. Always a greeting with a smile. Really good food without breaking the bank. Difficult to spend over $8.00 for food and drink.
After your meal, step back in time with a visit to the general store right next door. We’ve been to Ward’s on several visits and plan to be back soon.

From June 2016 Trip Advisor review:

If you like delicious hot cakes, bacon, eggs, and fried bologna, you will like to eat breakfast here! The breakfast food, good coffee and excellent service started off our vacation just super! It is a step back in time and just a refreshing diner to relax and enjoy a meal. They do serve lunch and the homemade mixed berry cobbler sign looked very inviting!!! They also have a small store that is connected to them so that you can pick up items that you may need before you get back on the road!

This was a great spot to grab lunch today! The CJ Burger (1/2 hamburger, 1/2 sausage) and onion rings were EXCELLENT! We loved the friendly atmosphere and will definitely be back!

Welcome to breakfast in the 1950s and it’s an absolute must when you’re in the area – good food – great price – better environment – your day will be better because you had breakfast at Wards Grill!

We were visiting nearby Pearson’s Falls and wanted to have lunch. We traveled into downtown Saluda to find Ward’s Grill. What a great discovery! This is a burger place with the authentic feel of times gone by. The burgers, fries and onion rings were excellent! The staff was really friendly and made it so easy to get just what you wanted. When I asked if they had Coke Zero the waitress said no, but she would run next door to the attached general store and see if they had it. She said we could have anything the general store had in stock and it could be added to our bill. Not only did she get me an ice cold 20oz Coke Zero but they charged me a reasonable amount for it (way less than a gas station or even most restaurant fountain beverages). It was a delightful surprise. After our wonderful lunch we wandered through the general store and marveled at all the local and homemade items. We went home with some outstanding blackberry preserves. I would highly recommend a stop at Ward’s if you are anywhere near Saluda. It is even worth a detour.

Ward’s Grill is the kind of restaurant that you don’t see too often today. It’s just a little restaurant in the quaint town of Saluda, NC. I went there for breakfast. This is a place that the locals go to.

The food was quite good, prices are reasonable and the place reminds you of days gone by. I look forward to going back and eating lunch – hamburgers and onion rings!!

Really friendly staff at Ward’s. We’ve been going to Ward’s for years and it just never changes. The food is right off the grill and served with a smile. The prices are too good to be true and haven’t changed in years. Always fun to browse the general store adjacent to the grill.

We’ll be back soon!

We stopped in on Wednesday and picked up one of your store’s homemade chicken pot pies and a three berry cobbler. WONDERFUL!! Today we picked up another cobbler to bring to Atlanta with us as we head back home to Florida. If only we could purchase them online!!!!!! Can you ship frozen?

Keep up the great work and stay small town forever.

September 2012 -

Hey folks. I was there with my husband just last week and we enjoyed many breakfasts at Ward’s Grill. I was sad to have to come back home. I really loved the sausage and when I asked about it, I was told that you can ship it out. If that’s the case how can I get some? It was so good! When I make pork stuffing for my Thanksgiving Dinner I have to use Jimmy Dean’s. It can’t compare to the flavor in yours. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks and again as we say up here “wicked awesome breakfasts.”

P. S. When I tell you my husband is a picky breakfast eater, I’m not kidding. He was so thrilled with your western omelets that he ate three last week!! He gets very frustrated when he orders them elsewhere and no one knows to cook the veggies first!! Seems simple, right?

I loved my grits and biscuits. I really hope we get to come back someday. We just loved meeting the servers and just loved the whole atmosphere there in little Saluda.”

Our steak was melt-in-your-mouth wonderful. You just do not find that type of meat anywhere else. Thank you so much for carrying it. And the breakfast sausage was super also. Just the two of us ate the entire pound of sausage in two mornings. Our lunch was also great at the Grill and we will continue to make it a point to eat there whenever we have the pleasure of passing through Saluda. Thanks, again, to you and each of the employees for allowing us to enjoy your wonderful store & grill and the great food that they provide.

Really loved the attitude & politeness of staff. We dined twice while shopping and returned with BSA troop of 20 + youth and adults. Great experience, we would highly recommend Ward’s  Grill to our friends and family who may visit the Saluda area. Some of the  best foods in the area with a price that is well within budget.
